The main part of the walls and towers were built in the reign of Boris Godunov (1598 – 1605's). They turned the monastery on a powerful fortress that played some role during the struggle for Moscow for the Time of Troubles. At the end of 17 century towers were finished with luxury "crowns" in the style of "Naryshkin barocco".
